Joyce Carol Thomas was a poet, playwright, motivational speaker, and author of more than 30 books of poetry, novels, and children's books. Her dedication to young readers, especially young, Black readers dominates much of her writing, including her reworking of folk tales discovered by Zora Neale Hurston.
